An international student has the right to live in European countries for the study duration if he/she has:  

• Got admission to a recognised university
• Sufficient income from any source to cover the living cost
• Comprehensive health insurance

  On completion of studies, the right to reside is withdrawn if the student does not have proof of work or sufficient resources for support to stay in the country.

During the first 3 months of stay, the student need not register the residence with local authorities. After 3 months of stay, the student has to obtain a document confirming the right to stay. For this, registering the residence with the local authorities by providing the following documents is necessary.  

• Proof of enrolment in a recognised university
• Comprehensive health insurance proof
• A declaration that there are sufficient resources to meet the living costs without any income support.

  The student is eligible for PR if he/she has lived legally by meeting the conditions stipulated continuously for five years. A PR permits the student to stay in Europe as long as he/she wishes.

The following does not impact the continuity of stay:

• Temporary absence for less than 6 months in a year.
• Longer absence is permitted for individuals in military service.
• One-time absence for 12 consecutive months in the case of:
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Vocational training
  • Posting to another country
  • Serious illness
  • work
